1st Place-Maria CampbellSmith

Continuum

by Maria CampbellSmith

At this word

an infant breathes.

And here,

somebody dies.

In mid rhyme

two lovers dine,

but a bleeding victim

cries.

How narrow is

the world of one:

no forest for the trees.

Countless,

faceless

poets

script thoughts

the same as these.

Whether my hand

flips the signal,

numb

to any cue or shout,

sphere keeps spinning,

people sinning,

birth and death

day in

day out.

Bio-Maria CampbellSmith is a teacher, a writer, a traveller: a daughter, a wife and a mom. Raised in a small town Ontario, she proudly calls Ottawa home.
